The Rewind Technique for Trauma and PTSD

Rewind Therapy

Rewind Therapy, also known as the Rewind Technique, is a gentle and effective approach that helps individuals process traumatic experiences in a safe and controlled way.

Trauma and PTSD can feel overwhelming, often leaving us stuck in a cycle of distressing memories and emotions.

This method has gained recognition for its ability to reduce the emotional intensity of traumatic memories without requiring you to relive them in detail.

What is the Rewind Technique?

The Rewind Technique is a therapeutic method designed to help people struggling with trauma, PTSD, or phobias.

It works by allowing the brain to reprocess distressing memories, storing them as neutral, non-threatening events. This process helps reduce the emotional and physical responses often triggered by reminders of trauma.

Unlike traditional therapies, the Rewind Technique for PTSD does not require you to repeatedly discuss or re-experience the traumatic event. Instead, it uses a dissociative process, enabling you to view the memory from a safe and detached perspective.

This makes it a particularly appealing option for those who find it difficult to talk about their experiences.

How does Rewind Therapy Work?

The process is simple yet highly effective and typically involves the following steps:

  • Relaxation: I will guide you into a deeply relaxed state, often using breathing exercises or guided imagery. This creates a safe and calm environment for the process.

  • Visualisation: You’ll imagine watching a "movie" of your traumatic memory on a screen, as though you are an observer rather than a participant. This step helps to reduce the emotional intensity of the memory.

  • Rewinding: I will guide you to mentally "rewind" the memory, playing it backward in your mind. This is repeated several times, often at different speeds, to further neutralise the emotional charge.

  • Reintegration: Once the memory has been processed, you’ll be gently brought back to the present moment, often feeling a sense of relief and reduced anxiety when recalling the event.
